This summer, like every summer for the past six years, we decided to spend our summer holidays in Greece, and true to tradition, it did not disappoint. One week in Paros, another in Naxos – this holiday left us craving for more! Let’s start with my Paros guide to find out my tips and top picks for planning your next Paros holidays.

Wind mill in Paros

Located in the central Aegean Sea and part of the Cyclades island group, Paros is among the most popular tourist islands. From vibrant nightlife and seaside cocktail bars, to refined boutiques and crystalline waters, not to mention the charming little parish churches and chapels dotting the island’s picturesque landscape. Paros is poised to capture your heart.

How to Get To Paros

So how to get to this dreamland? You have two options to get to Paros: by plane or by ferry. There is a National Airport in Paros where you can arrive by taking a flight from Athens which will take approximately 45 minutes. At present, the airlines operating the flights are Olympic Air and Sky Express, plus Avanti Air from Austria.

The second option is to take a ferry from Piraeus Port in Athens. While there are many flights operating between Athens and the islands, in my experience, there are often turbulent conditions due to the frequent strong winds. It’s worth noting that the internal flights are typically operated by smaller planes, so if flying isn’t your piece of cake, you might want to consider the ferry option. There are different companies you can choose to travel with: Seajets, Blue Star Ferries, Hellenic Seaway and more. The duration of the trip is between 3 and 4 hours depending on the ferry company.

How’s the weather in Paros?

As an Italian living in the UK, I came to understand that the perception of ‘warm’ isn’t quite the same for everyone!

The weather during our stay was fantastic, though it could get a bit breezy! We were in Paros from August 18th to the 26th, and we lucked out with eight cloudless days. It was sunny with a constant breeze that usually calmed down in the evenings, at least in Naoussa. The nights were warm and dry, and the daytime temperatures ranged from 25 to 30 degrees.

Paros shares a climate common to the Cycladic islands, characterized by classic Mediterranean weather patterns.
The summers are hot and sunny, while the winters remain relatively mild. As Paros is located in the middle of the Aegean Sea, strong winds from the North, known as Meltemia, sweep across Paros, with their peak intensity occurring from late July through the middle of August.

Even in the hottest months a refreshing breeze typically graces the island. The best time to visit Paros is between June and the middle of September. The warmest months are July and August, and temperatures range from 23°C to 35°C, but they are also the busiest. Winters on the island are mild, occasionally accompanied by a bit of rain. Where to Stay in Paros

When it comes to choosing your ideal accommodation, it all comes down to your unique preferences and budget. During my stay, I opted for Naoussa, and I would recommend it if you like a lively nightlife, sometimes very crowded, if you like shopping and chic boutiques, posh restaurants and if you are in love with the Cycladic fishing villages.

NAOUSSA

Naoussa square Paros

Nestled in the Northern part of the island Naoussa is a lovely village by the sea, in typical Cyclidic style with whitewashed houses and narrow streets.
Nousssa it’s definitely the most characteristic town on the island and the most lively. Perfect for couples for a romantic stay but also for friends looking for cocktail bars and fun. The quaint Naoussa is the queen of Paros’ nightlife.
This vibrant town is a bijou, scattered with little souvenir shops and boutiques, taverns, and posh restaurants that serve mainly fish.
Nassau is also sunset kissed as it stands on the North West coast.
It’s also close to 2 of the most famous and beautiful beaches in Paros, Monastiri and Kolympethres Beach.

It’s worth mentioning that it’s the most popular destination so it’s very busy. If you love quiet this might not be the right choice. It’s also the most expensive town and in my opinion a bit overpriced. If you are looking for accommodation on a budget look elsewhere!

The village is 40/45 minutes by car from Paros Airport depending on traffic. You can ask your accommodation to arrange a transfer for you or take the bus.

If you find yourself in Paros in August, mark your calendar for the Barbarossa Pirate Festival. This lively celebration pays tribute to a historic victory dating back to 1537 against Barbarossa and his pirates.

During the festival you will have the chance to dance to the rhythm of traditional Greek dances and music. As the night sky lights up with a dazzling fireworks display, local people dressed as pirates will parade throughout the town. Keep a watchful eye, for even the restaurant where you’re enjoying a meal might find itself under the ‘attack’ of these playful pirates!

PARIKIA

Parikia or Paroikia, is the island’s capital and main port located in the Western part of the island.
Being a port town with lots of ferries and tourists disembarking here, Parikia is quite busy and it’s also the biggest town on the island. However, as you take leisurely walks along its historic alleyways, you’ll come to appreciate that Parikia possesses a unique charm all its own.
Parikia is located 20 minutes by car from the airport and 20/25 minutes from Naoussa (the road is usually quite busy).
Due to its position, it can be the sweet spot to visit the island. Approximately 30 minutes from Tripti beach the most southern beach and Paralia Lageri in the North.

PISO LIVADI

Piso Livadi is a little charming fishing village with a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a great option for travelers seeking a quieter and more laid-back experience (and a bit cheaper). With a small harbour, taverns by the sea and a few souvenir shops, you can find cozy guesthouses, apartments, and beachfront hotels here. There are two sandy beaches one near the harbour and another one a bit further south. Piso Livadi is in the middle of the island so it can be a valid base if you want to explore around.

ALIKI

Similar to Piso Livadi, Aliki is a calm fishing village that offers a tranquil lifestyle. Approximately 16 kilometers southwest of Parikia, it’s also close to the airport (10 minutes). Aliki boasts a charming port that gazes across to the neighboring island of Antiparos. and excellent taverns that adorn the waterfront. You will also find sandy beaches with crystalline waters and a range of accommodations.

LEFKÉS

Lefkes can be a pleasant choice for those who can resist the allure of the sea. Tackle away from the hustle and bustle of Parikia and Naoussa, Lefkes offers an authentic Greek experience. It’s ideal for nature lovers and those interested in hiking.

Paros: Scooter or Car?

I might be a bit biased as I love wandering around by scooter, but I recommend renting a scooter. Paros is just the right size to explore on a scooter, and the roads are well-maintained. What’s more, and this is one of the things we loved most about it, it’s a breeze to find parking, especially in Naoussa.

We went with Paros on Wheel for our scooter rental, and we couldn’t have been happier with the service. Angie was fantastic and incredibly helpful. We handled all our arrangements via email and then on WhatsApp once we arrived. They even delivered the scooter straight to our apartment. It was a brand-new, stylish Piaggio scooter that was super comfy. We absolutely loved it!

Villa Isabella (£££)

Paros guide: sunset at Villa Isabella in Naoussa

Villa Isabella and its warm-hearted owner, Ioanna, were an absolute delight – I can’t sing their praises enough! Communication with her was seamless from the start. She arranged a hassle-free airport transfer for us and gave us a warm welcome upon arrival.
She recommended some nice places where to have breakfast, we left the suitcase and when we got back we found them in our room. The apartment was a dream, meticulously curated and nicely decorated, with everything you need: a kitchenette, coffee machine, toaster, kettle, and fridge with water. A lovely bathroom with a shower in Cycladic style and even a CD player.

But the absolute highlight was the terrace with a jaw-dropping panoramic view of Naoussa Bay.
Perfect for sipping local white wine, gazing at the stunning sunsets, and indulging in fresh breakfasts served right on the terrace. Falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the waves is simply priceless. The apartments are also conveniently close to Piperi Beach, a partly organised sandy beach. On our first day after a sleepless night, we just collapsed there!

Ioanna was an exceptional host, ensuring our every need was met and we kept each other in contact via WhatsApp. Her thoughtful recommendations for dining and beach-hopping, complete with a handy island map, made our stay very pleasant.

Unsolicited tips

Budget-friendly dining: Paros, especially Naoussa, has a reputation for being a tad more expensive than some other Greek islands. But here’s the secret – seek out the traditional taverns serving authentic Greek fare, not just seafood. You can also save by renting an apartment and preparing your own meals. Plus, brace yourself for a surprise – you might stumble upon a Domino’s in Naoussa!

Hop over to Antiparos. Just a stone’s throw from Paros, Antiparos is a hidden treasure waiting to be explored. Take a day trip to this charming island. From Pounda the trip is only 5 minutes!

Get off the beaten track. As Paros’s popularity has been on the rise, some beaches might get a bit crowded. Visit the famous spots, but make sure to venture off the beaten path as well for a quieter and more authentic experience.
